Battery discharges. Bad voltage regulator?
Battery discharges after two or three days of no use or driving. New battery, belt is tight, generator. No lights left on dome, headlight, or radio. Can this be a Bad voltage regulator. No short in system.
Hi Daniel,
First, let’s start with the basics. Have the battery fully charged and do a load test to confirm that the battery is good and will hold the charge. Most people over look this and spend a bunch of time and/or money just to find out the battery that they assumed was good, was not!
Next, with everything off, pull the negative post from the battery. Using a light tester, clip the grounding wire to the disconnected negative battery terminal. Touch the point of the test light to the negative battery terminal. If there is current flowing, it will cause the light to illuminate. Look closely, if the current draw is small the bulb will barely light. The more current draw the brighter the light is. Note: any current draw will cause the light to illuminate. If you have a radio with a clock or that maintains radio presets, this has a current draw and will give you a false reading.
OK, so let’s just say that the test light illuminates. Start eliminating circuits one by one until the light goes out. You can do this by pulling fuses out of the fuse box. Once you find the circuit that is the problem start looking what on that circuit is causing the problem!
Hope this helps!
